Reserve World Champion was Given Away at
Futurity
When the Five Star
Futurity held its inaugural futurity and
open horse show on September 1-2, 2007 at Fonner Park in Grand Island, Nebraska,
many exhibitors walked away with giveaway
prizes. One exhibitor walked away with a
prize that was a dream come true- a Reserve
World Champion Halter Stallion named The Five
Star Secret.
The Five Star
Secret was given away on Saturday evening of the
Five Star Futurity. The 2007 Red Dun
Reserve World Champion weanling halter stallion
was donated to the Five Star Futurity by Wild
Basin Ranch. The colt was given away in a
drawing to eligible exhibitors. As the
time for the drawing approached the announcer
encouraged exhibitors to come to the arena to
witness the excitement.
Debbie Kurtzbein
and her husband Dale found themselves quietly
relaxing by their stalls. Dale was
napping, and Debbie was feeling a little gloomy
that she hadn't been a winner in any of the
drawings that had yet been held. For
Debbie, that was "...par for the course."
Knowing that luck usually wasn't on her side for
giveaways, Debbie was sure one of the other
exhibitors would be awarded the red dun
stallion. Yet her curiosity to see the
colt won out and she began to make her way to
join the crowd of anxious exhibitors at the
arena. As Debbie walked to the arena, she
heard her name being called. When it
dawned on her that the Reserve World Champion
colt was now hers, she had to pinch herself.
The acquisition
of The Five Star Secret was a dream come true
for Debbie, who operates Kurtzbein Paint Horses,
a breeding operation in Montevideo, Minnesota.
Their breeding program focused on Paint Horses
and Debbie had been hoping to change the focus
to Double Registered Paint and Quarter Horses.
With the addition of The Five Star Secret,
Kurtzbein Paint Horses became Kurtzbein Paint &
Quarter Horses. It is the hope of Debbie
that The Five Star Secret will become the
paramount sire for their breeding operation.
Matched with the right mares, the colt will give
Kurtzbein Paint and Quarter Horses the
opportunity to breed for Double Registered (APHA/AQHA)
and even triple registered (APHA/AQHA/IBHA)
foals.
"Curlee", as The
Five Star Secret is affectionately known, will
spend the rest of this year relaxing and basking
in the glory of being an International Buckskin
Horse Association Reserve World Champion
Stallion. The colt made the eight hour
trip from Grand Island, NE to Montevideo, MN in
style and is settling in nicely at his new home.
Debbie notes that "Curlee" has a good
personality. He likes to be scratched and
likes attention. Show ring success for The
Five Star Secret is just beginning. Debbie plans for the colt to
re-enter the show ring next spring on the AQHA
show circuit. They will shoot for the 2008
IBHA or ABRA World Show and hope that the AQHA
World Show might be a possibility as well.
