tireless, loyal and willing.
Horse owners worldwide enjoy
the American Morgan Horse
for these traits as well as
many more!
The birth of
the American Morgan Horse
paralleled the birth of
America following the
Revolutionary war. The
stamina and courage of the
Morgan Horse echoed the
sentiments of our young
nation. The breed's
founding sire was a colt
named Figure. Justin
Morgan (teacher, composer,
businessman, and horseman)
acquired the bay colt after
moving from Vermont to
Massachusetts. The
colt impressed many with his
ability to outwalk, outtrot,
outrun, and outpull other
horses. Figure was
also well known for his
beauty, gentle disposition,
and ability to pass on his
characteristics to
offspring. |

Mint Jacob demonstrates the
versatility of the Morgan.
This stallion was named the
2006 Lippitt of the Year.

The ideal Morgan horse is based on the
characteristics that Figure possessed. The average
Morgan Horse stands between 14.1 and 15.2 hands high.
The Morgan is deep bodied and compact with strong
quarters. Morgan Horses should carry themselves proudly
with an upright neck, distinctive head and expressive
eyes.
Some Morgan Horses are referred to as
Lippitt Morgans. These horses were carefully bred
to conserve the original characteristics of the Justin
Morgan horse. In 1910, a gentleman named Fullerton
Phillips began a herd composed of Morgans with older
bloodlines. Several years later, Robert Lippitt
Knight, the man for whom this family of Morgans is
named, chose two stallions from the Phillips estate to
add to his breeding program. Today, the Lippitt
Morgan Breeders Association continues to promote and
preserve this old-time Morgan. |
