Appaloosa Facts

Appaloosa Breed Description:  The Appaloosa Horse breed of horse usually possessing specific characteristics of coat color and coat pattern.  Many Appaloosa horses have spotted coats, striped hoofs, and mottled skin. 

Color and Height:  Ideal examples of the Appaloosa horse display a spotted coat or pattern.  The Appaloosa Horse Club recognizes uses 7 common terms to refer to coat coloring for Registration Purposes- Blanket, Spots, Blanket with Spots, Roan, Roan Blanket, Roan Blanket with Spots, and Solid.  The average appaloosa is between 14.2 and 16 hh.

Breed History:  There is evidence of spotted horses on cave paintings from as early as 18,000 BC.  However, the modern history of the Appaloosa lies with the Nez Perce Indians who resided in the Pacific Northwest.  By the early 1800s, the Nez Perce were notable breeders of the Appaloosa horse.  The Nez Perce were highly selective in their choice of mated pairs and developed a high quality breed.  However, in the later 1800s, their efforts to better the breed were nearly ruined when the tribe was moved to a reservation and allowed to keep very few horses¹.  In 1938, the Appaloosa Horse Club was founded.  This led to a renewed interest in the breed.  Today, the Appaloosa is one of the most popular horse breeds.

Uses of the Appaloosa:  Appaloosas are a stock horse used for pleasure riding and showing.  Appaloosas may excel in a wide variety of events from western pleasure to eventing to dressage.
